Are you looking for Good Apps to Make Book Covers? Welcome to the right site. It’s so difficult searching for the best book cover design app. As a writer (I use writer because you aren’t an author until you’ve published a book), It’s no secret that one of the keys of getting your book to be bought or even to be clicked for a read is through an eye-catching cover.

When I began writing and was trying to understand the concept of book cover designs, I went through at least 12 sites telling me to pay someone to get it done, which was more or less them trying to advertise themselves and get me to pay them for my book cover. Honestly, some deals were affordable as well as tempting but as an amateur then (still an amateur now), it didn’t make sense for me to spend at least $30 on a book cover that was to be published on a free reading platform like wattpad. Then I came across ✨Free✨ book cover design apps. After much thought, I’ve decided to dedicate a post to new writers like myself who are navigating through the waters of fiction writing.
And, below are a list of Apps/sites (both free and paid) that can really help you as a new writer be it in aspects of Book covers, chapter banners, or even mini book trailers. Enough with the long talk, let’s get down to business.
1. Picsart (FREE//PRO)
Picsart is quite amazing, though I’d say it is more for editing personal and landscape pictures, but nonetheless, its collection of stickers and edits are top notch. And luckily for all of us, it is extremely easy to use.
2. Canva (FREE//PRO)
Where do I begin? Canva’s excellent and very user-friendly site should be the first of its perks. With Canva, it’s basically having a graphic designing degree without actually taking GD courses. It provides you with pre-designed works which you can edit into whatever concept you wish, be it chapter banners, story covers, business banners, anything really. It also offers millions of pictures, videos and templates that you could insert into your design.
And even with a free package, you can get as much done as with somebody with a Pro subscription on Picsart. The Pro option on the other hand provides twice as much features as the free ranging from over 420,000 templates, 75+ million pictures, videos graphics and the very convenient one-click magic resize, making it way easier for you to achieve your dream design. The PRO package starts at $4.99 per month making it $60 in a year, that is after you get a free 30-day trial.
3. Book Brush (PAID PLAN for covers, free ad designs)
While Canva is not limited to authors who want to take a stab at designing their own book covers, the creators of Book Brush had authors in mind when they designed the app. Easy to use and produces perfect results, the creators of Book Brush were clear with their intentions to make graphic design as easy for writers as never before.
Some of its features include a 3D cover design, a Cover creator standalone tool and over 600 pre-made templates. The only downside to Book Brush might be how tiered is pricing is; the more design features you want, the more expensive it is. The paid plan ranges from $99–246 per year.
4. Postermywall (FREE(limited)//paid)
Although having limited usage, Postermywall is another completely great book design app. And one of my favorite parts of it is that it is connected to Gettyimages, Flickr! and Pixabay, so you’re able to have access to unlimited photos of silhouetted figures, landscapes, sunsets or anything really that you can insert into your design.
Postermywall also allows people to design book cover templates for other people, so you can get pre-designed cover templates except that you’d have to edit it so as not to come up with an exact design as someone else. The only setback is that there are terms and conditions for using the pictures, and also free downloads come in smaller resolutions, whereas you can pay $2–5 for a higher resolution. The paid option goes for up to $320 per year for top tier.
5. Placeit (FREE(Limited) // PAID)
Placeit offers an exclusive variety of customizable tools that makes it very unique. One of my favorite features of it is that it allows you design cover templates based on the genre of your book. It offers a variety of pictures, graphics and illustrations so you can pretty much select your book cover without going through the stress of getting pictures off-site.
Its drawback? It costs $8 to download these covers. And the paid option goes for as far as $90.
6. Blurb BookWright (FREE)
If I’m being honest, Blurb BookWright is one of my favorite platforms. It a free-to-download site that is borders between a template designing platform and a photoshop-type one, and the best part? It’s way easier to use than you’d expect.
Blurb BookWright can be used to design both the cover of a book and the inside, and it is very useful for image-centered genres of books (cookbooks and the likes). You can even use it to assign an ISBN. I honestly cannot list one drawback for this site.
7. Visme (FREE)
Visme is a site that allows for designing a very unique set of book covers for you. There are quite a lot of tools to choose from, including uploading your own fonts and photos, and the ability to use the image extractor to pull in colors from a photo. It is very easy to use and does not require design experience (much like Canva and Blurb)
8. GIMP (FREE)
While you’re not required to spend coins on GiMP, what you are going to spend on it is your time. GIMP is more of a photoshop-type program whose learning curve requires vast amount of dedication to know how to use. The best part? It has features similar to Adobe Photoshop such as layering, custom brushes and clone stamping which can be put to good use in book cover designs. And once you do get a grasp of using GIMP, you can design more efficiently than with actual book cover design programs.
And that’s it! Those are all the free book cover design app/sites (or at least the paid ones worth the money) I can muster. But for those who wish to know more, there are some paid sites and apps which couldn’t get squeezed in. But here they are nonetheless;
- Adobe Indesign ($21 per month); which works on Windows and Mac.
And
2. Adobe Spark ($10 per month); which works on browsers.
