My visit to Badagry, Lagos was planned in summer of 2021. Intending to stay only for a week, my sisters(2) and i set off on the trip. For people that reside in Lagos, especially in the mainland areas, it is easier and less strenous for them to arrive at the coastal town. But since i was coming from Abuja, everything from arriving at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport at Ikeja to the 3-hour plus ride to Badagry, it was a lot more stressful than i imagined.
Not only that, nothing could have prepared me for all the bumps and dust we had to endure on the road. For a first timer like i was, it was definitely all seemingly stressful. But i can tell you all that stress dissipated once we got to the small yet peppy town.
For one, i couldn’t tell if the weather was like that during the entire year or the spirits in charge of Badagry’s weather just really liked us. But the skies were a radiant yet calming shade of blue. And it was ALWAYS like that.
This small town doesn’t look like a lot but trust me when i say it had a lot of surprises destinations with all beautiful stories behind them. The history of Nigeria from its inception lies in the small town. And read to find all of them below.

1. Suntan Beach
Probably since it was at a busy time of the year (summer), The beach was crowded but it still did not deter the quality of time we had at the it. It is packed with so much activities like horse riding, canoeing, not to mention there is a lot of new foods to try out and drinks. We got the Coconut water at a price of NGN350. The entry fee to the beach also costs NGN500-1,000 per head.
2. The First Story Building in Nigeria
If you’re amazed, I was as well when I learnt that The First Story Building in Nigeria is located in Badagry and it was built in 1845. This costs NGN800 for a tour around the place, showing the impact of remarkable personalities in the building and special relics. It features monuments like the first currency that was used in Nigeria and the first Yoruba translated Bible that was translated by our very own Late Bishop Ajayi Crowther.
3. Badagry National Heritage Museum
This costs NGN800 for entry into the Museum and a full tour and lecture as regards the history of Nigeria. It also contains a Souvenir shop which contains very adorable and budget friendly souvenirs ranging between NGN100-5,000.
4. The Point of No return
This would require a boat ride to get to it but those are readily available at the dock, the people from the museum or story building will easily help you get to it (the dock) since it is a related landmark to the guide i.e it is a part of the tour of the town. I honestly cannot remember much of what went on and how much we paid to get to this point of no return but i remember it was such a fun and cheery experience.
5. Whispering Palms
To be very honest, Whispering Palms was something that was on our bucket list, but unfortunately due to time and other frictions, we couldn’t get to go. But overall, the review of the place was entirely positive and one thing that was reiterated was the great view of the water from the poolside.
Well, that wraps up another blog post. I hope if you guys ever find yourselves in Badagry, you will put my review to good use. Till next time. Don’t forget to check out my other blog posts and subscribe to my e-mail list.
